After the release of “Time Travel City” and “Be a Time Traveler.”, and the initial activities they inspired the previous year, 2023 was a year that even more people all around Tenri City became involved with our city’s English catch-copy and slogan.
Starting a Club in the University and Community Activities
Tenri University students created a student club, the Time Travel City Circle, and recruited incoming students at the university’s Club Orientation in early April.
Their activities included making a video encouraging local students to create works for Tenri ☆ Beauty Discovery! ~Be a Time Traveler.~ during summer vacation, starting their own Instagram account @time_travel_citystudent , and introducing the beauty of Tenri and their activities to people at the Tenri University Open Campus and the university festival.
Students from the circle once again brought some excitement to the Tenri ☆ Beauty Discovery! ~Be a Time Traveler.~ by making signs leading to the venue, a Time Travel Tree that featured some of Tenri University’s popular sports teams, and a game for smaller children!
The students also actively participated in the Time Travel Walk event and the Tenri ☆ Beauty Discovery! ~Be a Time Traveler.~ Awards Ceremony, with roles ranging from presenting message cards, speaking, and even emceeing!
Elective Summer Vacation Project “Tenri ☆ Beauty Discovery! ~Be a Time Traveler.~”
For a second straight year, local elementary and junior high school students chose their own “time travel” theme, researched it themselves, and presented what they discovered in their own creative work for the elective summer vacation project “Tenri ☆ Beauty Discovery! ~Be a Time Traveler.~”. In early November, a total of 110 works were put on display at the Nara Prefecture Historical and Artistic Culture Complex.
Once again, visitors voted for works they felt “did a good job”, and wrote encouraging comments on their ballots as well. This year, the six works with the most votes received the Good Time Traveler Award, and students from the Time Travel City Circle chose four works to receive the Nice Time Traveler Award.
The awards ceremony was held in February, 2024. Guardians and many people from community organizations came together to recognize the students’ hard work.
With Bunkamura AIR
In October, some of the local elementary and junior high school students who made works for Tenri ☆ Beauty Discovery! ~Be a Time Traveler.~! met and interacted with two artists from the Artist in Residence program at the Nara Prefecture Historical and Artistic Culture Complex (called Bunkamura AIR), Nobuyuki Sugihara and Ayaka Nakamura. Researching local things, speaking with people, and compiling everything together to create a piece of work, the students and artists use the same process to discover beauty in our city.
Time Travel Walk Event
In November, we also held the first ever Time Travel Walk! Local families walked with volunteer guides many historic or famous places in the area, with the final goal being the Tenri ☆ Beauty Discovery! ~Be a Time Traveler.~ work exhibition venue. Members of the local Furusato Undo Committee, an organization preserving and sharing local traditions, also participated, holding a mochi pounding experience for families to enjoy, and serving freshly pounded mochi to everyone. Of course, students from the Time Travel City Circle participated as well, it was a day for all generations to enjoy Tenri together.
