Streets of Gingko Trees

20th Century

Every autumn, the heart of the city shines with golden leaves.

The gingko tree is the official tree of Tenri City, and it is also one of its most recognizable symbols. Many of the streets around Tenri City Hall, Tenrikyo Church Headquarters, Tenri University, and Tenri Main Street are lined with countless gingko trees, whose leaves gradually turn from green to a golden yellow every autumn. The street on the north side of Tenri City Hall that goes east toward Tenrikyo Church Headquarters is called Oyasato Oji street, and as the long tree branches form a beautiful tunnel over the street, it is one of the most popular places to visit.

People come from far and wide to take photos and enjoy the gingko trees, and many local events are held during this season. Some years the leaves change color early, some years they change late, but late autumn is usually a nice time to see them.

Bright leaves against a cool, blue sky. Soft leaves spread out like a golden carpet across the ground. The overwhelming beauty of the trees and leaves excites us, and also quietly tells us that winter and the end of the year are just around the corner.

Access

By train: The gingko trees are about 1 km southeast from JR and Kintetsu Tenri Stations. Perhaps it is easiest to walk east through the Tenri Main Street shopping arcade, and turn south at the second traffic light.

By car: The gingko trees are about 3 km south of the Tenri IC on the Nishi-Meihan Expressway, and 3 km southwest of the Tenri Higashi IC on the Meihan Expressway.

By bus: The nearest bus stop to the gingko trees are the Tenri-Shicho-Mae stop on the Nara Kotsu line.

Environment

The gingko trees are located near the heart of the city, between Tenri City Hall, Tenri Church Headquarters, Tenri University, and the Tenri Main Street. There is a variety of restaurants and shops along the Tenri Main Street and in the surrounding area. If you are walking from Tenri Station to Isonokami Jingu shrine or the Yamanobe-no-Michi path this time of year, you can take a slight detour south, and enjoy the beautiful seasonal colors.

Point

The beautiful gingko trees have become one of the symbols of Tenri City! In addition to the golden leaves, autumn is also a great time of year to enjoy local persimmons and the seasonal colors of places like Chogakuji Temple and Isonokami Jingu shrine.
