See & Do
Nara Prefecture Historical and Artistic Culture Complex
21st Century
Where people of all ages can learn, connect, and have fun.
Opened in 2022, the Nara Prefecture Historical and Artistic Culture Complex is a first of its kind facility! In its four separate wings, people can experience the restoration of precious cultural properties, specialty local goods and foods, contemporary works of art inspired by Nara, and many other special events.
In the Restorations and Exhibition Wing, visitors can watch through glass as ancient Buddhist sculptures, paintings and writings, historic buildings, and archaeological discoveries are carefully restored by professionals. While many of these precious items are usually on display in a museum, temple, or shrine, the Restorations and Exhibition Wing offers a rare opportunity to see these in an up close and more personal environment. The underground floor regularly holds exhibitions, displaying historical items from all around Nara Prefecture.
The Culture Exchange Wing features a market selling local fruits and vegetables, and other special foods from Nara Prefecture. The souvenir shop has items that are both traditional and modern, an example of how today’s craftsmen create while carrying on techniques of their predecessors. Beyond the market is a local restaurant, and the 2nd floor has a space for people to relax and eat, etc.
On the 1st floor of the Artistic Culture Wing is a space for children to experience creating art, as well as a large event hall. The 3rd floor has studios where artists-in-residence create contemporary works that have connections to the local culture or history. Their studios are sometimes open for the public to see, and their works are sometimes on display here, too.
The Information Wing has tourism and information pamphlets from all over Nara Prefecture. It is a great place to stop by if you have some extra time in the area, or if you want to plan your next trip!
No admission is required for any of the wings, but please understand that there are sometimes special events that require admission or reservations. Conveniently located in the same lot as the Nara Prefecture Historical and Artistic Culture Complex is a hotel, Fairfield by Marriott Nara Tenri Yamanobenomichi.
