Tour de Nippon in Nara・Tenri 2016

Hike and ride in Nara and Tenri. A weekend trip to return to the heart of Japan.

Greeted by fresh greenery, I head home with a refreshing feeling. This is an irreplaceable souvenir from the Tour de Nippon in Nara/Tenri, which was held on May 28th and 29th. Beautiful Shimahoroba, the hometown of Japan. Every time we visit Nara, we feel that way, and we have quietly completed our journey along the “Mountain Road”, whose name is even remembered in the Nihon Shoki. On the first day, we hiked about 14km towards Tenri starting from Mt. Miwa and Omiwa Shrine.

On the second day, we headed from Yamato Yagi towards Nara, cycling about 35 km through the flat land of Nara nestled in the mountains, feeling close to the mountain roads. We enjoyed a two-day itinerary that thoroughly enjoyed the Nara Basin, based on the mountain roads. The first day’s hike started with a morning visit to Omiwa Shrine with a volunteer guide from Yamanobe no Michi, a group of representatives from Tenri City, and all the participants. Keep your spirits up and move forward at your own pace. A landscape dotted with thick earth, or ancient tombs, here and there. These mountain roads have always been a way of life for local people. People’s daily lives and the mysterious experience of feeling the presence of ancient people overlap. For lunch, Mr. Katsui of Western restaurant Katsui in Osaka, whose hometown is Yanagimoto, which is located in the area where the road passes, was waiting for us with his friends who had gathered at his invitation and prepared a delicious bento box. Also, the volunteer guide’s homemade sengiri radish was a luxurious supplement.
